Wates Construction was appointed via the SCAPE Major Works National Construction framework to deliver the new facility for the swimming events at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

In 2018, Wates Construction was appointed via the SCAPE Major Works National Construction Framework to deliver the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick for Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council.

The centre was a landmark development for the Midlands, initially built to host swimming events at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Designed with long-term community health and wellbeing in mind, it reopened after the Games as a state-of-the-art leisure facility with three pools, seats for up to 1,000 spectators and additional leisure facilities, including activity studios, sports halls, a fitness suite and more.

“Our world class athletes deserve world class facilities, and this is what I saw when I visited Sandwell Aquatic Centre. The collaboration between Wates Group and Sandwell Council was clear to see, and the facility will be a true jewel in our nation’s crown.”

Mark Robinson, Group Chief Executive, SCAPE
