East Dunbartonshire Council set out to bring together two of its Additional Support Needs (ASN) schools, replacing outdated facilities with a state-of-the-art, purpose-built environment designed around the complex needs of its pupils.

Delivered by McLaughlin & Harvey via the SCAPE Scotland Construction framework, the project was shaped by early collaboration and extensive stakeholder and community engagement. This was essential in creating a shared vision for a school supporting children and young people aged 2–18, with needs ranging from mild and moderate learning disabilities to severe and profound learning and medical requirements.

Accessibility was central to the design, ensuring full inclusion for wheelchair users and those with mobility, sensory, hearing and visual impairments. The result is a highly adaptable, bespoke education facility where every element supports pupils’ independence, wellbeing and learning.

Delivered in 83 weeks, Woodland View now provides a 20-place nursery for children aged 2–5, alongside flexible learning spaces for 90 primary and 90 secondary pupils, supporting 200 young people in total. Completed in summer 2023, the school also features high-quality outdoor spaces, including landscaped areas, a multi-use games area (MUGA) and a full-size football pitch. These facilities not only enhance the school experience but are also accessible to local groups, strengthening community connections and encouraging wider use of the site.

The project also delivered significant social value, generating £6.5 million in social impact and achieving 85% SME spend, demonstrating McLaughlin & Harvey’s strong commitment to supporting local businesses and creating lasting economic benefits.
